AI Memory vs Project State: Where Giraffe Fits Alongside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

AI Memory vs Project State: Where Giraffe Fits Alongside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

AI memory and project state solve different continuity problems

Native AI memory can help an assistant reuse relevant personal context or information from earlier conversations. Native Projects can group chats, files, instructions, or knowledge around a subject. Giraffe addresses a narrower question: what is true now for this undertaking, what was decided, what remains open, and what changed?

These approaches can be complementary. This is not a claim that native memory or native Projects are inferior.

Giraffe Projects

Anthropic’s official documentation now states that Claude Projects are available to all users, including Free users, with a maximum of five Projects for Free accounts. The earlier paid-only statement has been removed from this article.

Personal context is not the same as undertaking state

A memory feature may remember that a user prefers concise answers or is planning a trip. A Giraffe Project can instead record that the trip now runs May 8–16, Hotel B replaced Hotel A, and the return flight remains unresolved.

The distinction is between context that may improve a response and an explicit record a person can open and read.

Native Projects and Giraffe also differ in purpose

Native assistant Projects are designed to organize work inside their respective assistant environments. Giraffe is a separate, human-readable Project record for selected conclusions.

With Giraffe, the user explicitly saves what matters. Current holds active facts and values. Decisions records adopted choices. Open questions exposes uncertainty. History retains replaced values and prior decisions.

Giraffe can connect with documented ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini workflows, but cross-AI use is not required for the product to make sense. A person using only one assistant can still use Giraffe to keep the project’s current state readable outside the chat.

Which should you use?

Use native memory when you want supported personal context to inform future responses.

Use a native Project when you want chats, files, or instructions organized within that assistant.

Use Giraffe when you want an explicit, maintained record of the project’s current facts, decisions, open questions, and changes.

Some people may use all three layers.

The boundary that matters

Giraffe is not an automatic conversation backup and does not claim to replace every native memory or Project feature. Its documented job is to keep selected conclusions readable as a Project changes.
